Long, hot summer days are here, and they can be rough for many of us. When searching for relief from the heat, it can be tough to stay cool even in the middle of the night. If you’re tired of tossing and turning through the hot summer nights, you might want to consider a memory foam mattress for a comfortable sleep that will help you stay cool. The two most important factors for finding the right memory foam mattress for you are composition and density.
Memory Foam Composition
Memory foam mattresses are not all created equal–finding the right one for you will have a lot to do with the composition of the foam itself. Polyurethane, which is used to make memory foam, can be made from a variety of materials: most often, petroleum-based foam, gel-infused foam, and plant-based foam. Petroleum-based memory foam is the densest, and least likely to let air flow through your mattress. Gel-infused and plant-based memory foam are more temperature-neutral, taking on the temperature of the room and allowing for better airflow.
Memory Foam Density
Memory foam known for contouring to your body in order to give you a comfortable sleep, and this has to do with the density of the foam. Incidentally, the foam’s density also impacts its ability to keep you cool. The ideal density for a memory foam mattress is between 3.5 and 5.0 pounds per cubic foot. It’s important to find the right density for you, as a lower density mattress could offer less support than higher density options. You should try several memory foam options to find the right balance of back support and airflow for you.
