With warmer weather just around the corner, it seems that spring has finally sprung. In order to properly organize your household this season, get started early on your spring cleaning. A whole house deep clean is a great way to jumpstart the season, and that means that you need to keep in mind cleaning some items that may seem foreign to you. One of these items that you should clean are your pillows. In order to properly do so, there are a few guidelines that you should follow to make sure that you do not damage your pillows in the process. Keep reading to find out the best way to get your pillows clean!
Air Them Out
Before cleaning your pillows, there are things you can do on a regular basis to maintain their cleanliness. Make sure that you fluff your pillow on a regular basis to help them maintain their shape and remove dust. Once a month, hang them outside on a bright day. If you cannot do this, then run them through the dryer on a no-heat cycle.
How to Wash Your Pillows
Pillows can lose their shape if they are washed in the washing machine too often, but you should do it regardless twice a year to remove dirt, dust, and dead skin and to keep them fresh and clean. Before you wash your pillow in the washing machine, make sure that you check the directions on the label. Use the gentle cycle on your washer and run the cycle with lukewarm water and a high-grade laundry detergent. If your washing machine is big enough, then wash two pillows at once to balance the load and allow the water and detergent to circulate more evenly.
How to Dry Your Pillows
Once you have washed your pillow, make sure that it is completely dry all the way through before you put it back on your bed. Otherwise, mold and mildew could develop. You can choose to put the pillow in the dryer for an hour on medium heat. You can also add dry towels to the load of you want to speed up the drying process. If you have them, you can also add two fresh tennis balls to the load to keep the filling in the pillow from clumping up. After the drying cycle is finished, double check that the pillow is completely dry by feeling inside to see if there are any damp spots.
